You must apply before the expiration date written on your visa.
If you do not apply for an extension, your stay will become illegal and you may face fines or other disadvantages.
You can apply up to 4 months before the expiration date.
In general, it is safest to apply 1–2 months before the visa expires.
If you pass the expiration date, extension is not possible and legal disadvantages may occur.
Foreign nationals holding the following visa statuses may apply for an extension of stay:
D-2 (Student)
D-4 (Trainee)
E-7 (Specialty Occupation)
E-9 (Non-Professional Employment)F-1, F-2, F-3, F-6 and other long-term stay visas
Other long-term stay statuses recognized by the Ministry of Justice
If there has been a change of address, it must be reported first.
If your passport validity is short, you may need to renew your passport in advance.
You must bring your Alien Registration Card (ARC).
If you have had a period of illegal stay, your extension may be denied or restricted.
Students (D-2) must meet attendance and academic requirements.
Workers (E-7 / E-9) must maintain valid employment.
